This mask is part of the Dan style of design for their many musical/dance ceremonies . Music surrounds every aspect of Dan culture: Death, Marriage, Birth, and Weather are all celebrated with music. The masks are also used for education, competition, war, peace, and social regulation/etiquette. These masks are amazingly detailed to the eye, and enticing to the touch. They are usually kept in families for generations…and then, unforeseen circumstances finds them in the open market were they are much sort after and prized by the west.
